Basalt
250 × 250 × 320 mm
Hand-carved, one of a kind
2023
Giant Barrel Sponge considers the quiet presence and extraordinary longevity of one of the ocean’s oldest animal forms. Its soft, folded body has been translated into basalt—a material formed through volcanic heat and geological time.
The work rests on a deliberate contradiction: a porous and seemingly fragile marine animal given permanence through stone. Its deep ribs, irregular opening and naturally pitted surface retain the physical character of the basalt while drawing attention to an organism usually encountered only in fragments washed ashore.
