Select Commissions

I accept a limited number of commissions each year.

Each piece is developed through close conversation — with material, with place, and with purpose. The process is not rushed. It unfolds through dialogue between intention and resistance, listening and response.

Stone is not neutral. It carries density, memory, geological time. The work emerges from what the material will allow — and what the context requires.

Approach

Every commission begins with a conversation.

We discuss scale, environment, function, symbolism, and the practical realities of where the work will live. From there, I select material deliberately — often igneous or metamorphic stone such as basalt, andesite, granite, argillite, pounamu, agate or obsidian — chosen for structural integrity and longevity.

Sketches, maquettes, or reference images may be developed where appropriate. Some works evolve intuitively through the stone itself.

Durability is central. These works are created to endure — materially and conceptually — beyond immediate context.

Types of Commission

• Sculptural works for interior or landscape settings
• Architectural or site-responsive pieces
• Functional carved objects (bowls, vessels, mortars)
• Wearable stone forms
• Commemorative or ancestral works

I do not replicate previous works. Each commission is singular.

Timeline

Due to the physical nature of the process and the time required for refinement, commissions typically require several months from initial consultation to completion, depending on scale and complexity.

A deposit secures placement within the annual schedule.

Investment

Investment reflects material, scale, and labour.
