“Ko te whenua, ko te moana, ko au; ko au, ko te whenua, ko te moana.”

“I am the land, I am the sea; the land and the sea are me.”
— Māori Proverb

Amie Redpath (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Mamoe, b.1978) is a sculptor who creates small and medium-scale works in the form of functional art, jewellery, and sculptures. Amie seeks to inspire reflection on humanity's relationship with the natural world and the oceans that unite us all, emphasizing our shared responsibility to preserve biodiversity and ecological balance. Her artistic process involves a tactile exploration of collected rocks, rope, weaving, and occasionally wood, reflecting an innate connection to the Earth. Inspired by ancestral wisdom, Redpath’s sculptures integrate intricate engravings and relief work to capture both the simplicity of forms like seaweed vesicles and the complexity of human figures. Amie lives and works at Whangarei Heads, with a view of the ocean. Her life experiences have often involved nature, working as a guide on rivers, tracks, and later sailing across oceans.

Her philosophy is based around the following: "Life began with a single cell, leading to an explosion of life on Earth. We are part of Earth. Our ancestors knew this deep within their beings. We are the air, the sea, the land, the plants, the animals. We are unique, yes. However, we must not forget that we are one with the Earth and all living beings. Interconnection runs deep."
