Carved from volcanic stone, The Alchemist reimagines one of humanity's oldest tools. For centuries mortars and pestles have transformed herbs into medicine, spices into flavour and simple ingredients into nourishment. This deep mortar and pestle is inspired from Thai Culinary Traditions.
I am drawn to their symbolism—the idea that transformation occurs through patience, pressure and time. The stone itself carries this story, formed deep within the earth before being shaped by hand into a functional sculpture. Designed for use yet equally at home as an object of contemplation, The Alchemist celebrates ritual, materiality and the enduring relationship between craft, nourishment and transformation.
Medium: 23 -24 x 19-20 cm diameter. 5 cup capacity. Weight : 10kg.
Large: 26-28 x 22-24 cm diameter. 6.5-7 cups capacity. Weight : 12kg.
The bowl is 150 x 150mm, diameter and deep.
