The practice of seafood gathering has been passed down through many generations, as is the knowledge of kaitiaki, or caring for the land and seas. This taonga represents that knowledge alongside this simple form, to continue this passing down of knowledge. in this manner, hopefully we can offer planet earth and all of her creatures, great amd small, a world of protection rathe than extinction.
Pounamu was chosen for this carving, particularly Kahurangi greenstone, due to its symbolic and cultural meaning, of protection: for the wearer and earth, may it offer guidance to its wearer, and connect them further to the whenua and moana. Int the spirit of togetherness of kaimoana collecting be cared over to the togetherness in kaitiaki or guardianship of home, land and sea.
