Amie’s work invokes a sense of nostalgia for these timeless tools while highlighting their enduring relevance in modern times. It encourages us to reconnect with the wisdom of the past and appreciate the foundations of our culinary and creative traditions.
Volcanic Rock, often Andesite, is source locally from around different locations in Northland, New Zealand. Andesite is a hard stone, well suited to the grinding and pounding actions of this tool. Amie’s original mortar and pestle was carved from Andesite, with no signs of wear and tear, no chips of damage incurred, after more than 12 years in use. The Mexican practice of passing your pounder and bowl, pestle and mortar, down through the generations is a great one. Amie wishes to continue this legacy with her enduring works.
