Carnelian Seaweed Vesicle
32 x 28 x 18 mm.
Inspired by the buoyant vesicles of seaweed, this piece reflects the quiet wisdom of the ocean. Vesicles hold seaweed at precisely the right depth in the water column—lifting it toward light while keeping it anchored to place. They embody a delicate balance between grounding and elevation. In this work, they become a metaphor for sovereignty: the ability to remain true to oneself while navigating the currents of life. Carved in pounamu, a stone of enduring strength and connection, this form speaks of resilience, guidance, and finding the level at which we each are able to truly thrive.
The banded carnelian seaweed vesicle serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of coastal ecosystems. Protecting and treasuring these habitats is vital, especially considering the frequency with which vesicles wash up after rough seas.
Carnelian, with its energizing and grounding properties, fosters courage, vitality, and creativity, offering strength in our conservation efforts.
