The molcajete originates in Mexico. As a long time cook and crafter of mortar and pestles, I originally carved a molcajete as a commission, a gift from Kiwi husband to his Mexican wife.

The wide bowl was created to grind and pulp salsas from fresh ingredients such as tomatoes, chilies, coriander and salt.

The Mexican tradition of the molcajete is to pass down your vessel to future generations. this basalt, or Andesite, both volcanic rocks commonly found in Northland New Zealand are traditional materials used to create these timeless kitchen tools. The three leggesd base, is tradiotnal in form, providing stability whilst maintining a better more user friendly practical working weight for this large bowl.

These functional pieces were made to be very utlaritilian whlie being stylish.
